Editor’s letter: Healthy lessons

As we celebrate our moms this month, let’s take a moment to think about the importance of having a healthy role model – and being one. What healthy lessons did your mom teach you that have stuck with you through the years? Some of my mom’s greatest lessons were about being active. Exercise was part of our daily lives. We swam, biked and played tennis together. We also did our share of yardwork, housework and farmwork. Today, she is 72 years young. She’s in great shape, at a healthy weight and takes no medications. She even joined a gym to take water aerobics classes!

The value of having (and being) a healthy role model cannot be overstated. I try to follow my mom’s healthy example, and I want to be a healthy role model for others in my own life. When I feel like I’m falling down in the fitness department, I try harder for my nieces and nephews. They inspire me with their joy and energy. The lessons I learned when I was young have stuck with me through adulthood – and I have my mom to thank for that.

So here’s to all the healthy role models out there. You are greatly appreciated.

In good health,
